The truth about choosing men who can’t love you the way you deserve

Black and white lit candles tied together with twine on a table, symbolizing emotional attachment, imbalance, and the tension of loving someone who is unavailable.

I wish someone had been this honest with me years ago. Nothing will expose your unhealed wounds faster than loving a man who is emotionally unavailable. The thing about this dynamic is that you don’t realize it at first. In the beginning, the relationship feels exciting, magnetic, even intoxicating. You see the charm, you feel the chemistry, and you catch the glimpses of who he could be.

And because you’re someone who loves deeply, you begin filling in the missing pieces with hope. You start believing potential over patterns, you may shrink your needs to fit whatever emotional space he gives you, and before you know it, you’re invested in someone who was never prepared to hold the depth of your heart in the first place.

How Emotionally Unavailable Men Mirror the Parts of You Still Healing

Loving emotionally unavailable men used to be one of my biggest teachers. I didn’t want to admit that I kept choosing men who couldn’t meet me where I was because that meant turning the mirror back on myself. Clock it🫰🏼. It meant acknowledging that a part of me was still vibrating on a low-vibrational level that I was comfortable with accepting. For a long time, I wasn’t ready to see that. I kept telling myself I had “bad luck,” or “men today ain’t shit,” when deep down, my Spirit team was whispering the real truth:

Babygirl, you’re matching the energy of what you believe you deserve.

I was operating from wounds that were still open. Abandonment that never fully healed. Childhood patterns I thought I outgrew. The part of me that learned to confuse being chosen with being cherished. Without realizing it, I started gravitating toward men who mirrored the emotional chaos I was used to. And because I didn’t want to lose them, I kept changing myself to fit into whatever version of myself I thought they would stay for.

The more I tried to fix them, love them into being better, or prove I was “worth choosing,” the more I abandoned myself. I became the woman who held everything together except her own heart. I was so busy carrying the relationship that I didn’t notice I was carrying the whole emotional load alone. I ignored my needs because I was terrified of being alone. I felt like they would leave if I asked for more than their bare minimum. When you realize you’ve been fighting for someone who was never fighting for you, the awakening hits you right in the chest.

Why Emotional Breadcrumbs Feel Like Connection

What’s wild is how easy it is to get hooked on someone who only gives you the bare minimum to keep you hooked. The breadcrumbs feel like a feast when your heart is starving for consistency. He texts just enough to keep you from walking away. He opens up time to time to make you believe that you’re special. He says the right thing when you’re ready to detach.

And because you’re someone with a big heart, maybe even an empath, you cling to the version of him that might exist one day, ignoring the version that stands in front of you right now. That push and pull dynamic becomes a cycle your nervous system mistakes for passion, when in reality it’s dysregulation, anxiety, and emotional addiction.

The Moment Everything Finally Clicks

One day, something in you snaps. Not in a dramatic, movie-scene way. It’s quieter than that. Softer. Almost anticlimactic. It’s the moment when your Spirit gets tired before your heart does. The disappointments stop hurting because it becomes familiar, like background noise you learned to tune out. The inconsistencies stop confusing you because you finally understand they weren’t accidents but rather patterns. Those patterns tell the truth long before you’re ready to listen.

The fantasy you built up… the one kept you hanging on, eventually collapses. You stop clinging to who he could be and start seeing who he actually is. You’ll notice the emotional distance you once romanticized as mysterious, the lack of effort you used to excuse as him being busy, or you catch yourself rereading texts trying to decode feelings he never had. Suddenly, it all feels… empty. Not devastating or shocking… just empty. That’s how you know the spell is breaking.

Spirit steps in heavy during this phase. Signs start popping up everywhere, like angel numbers at the exact moment you think about him, tarot cards pulling the same message in different decks, dreams that feel like warnings, or conversations that mirror your exact situation. Your body becomes louder, your intuition becomes sharper, and your peace becomes a non-negotiable. Every single part of your inner world starts pointing you toward a truth you’ve been avoiding: This isn’t love, beloved. This is a karmic lesson.

The awakening begins not when he leaves, or when you cry. It doesn’t happen when the relationship finally ends. The awakening begins the moment you stop lying to yourself. When you stop trying to negotiate with God about a man who was never meant to be your forever, that’s when you decide that your healing, peace, and alignment matter more than the temporary comfort of being chosen by the wrong person.

The Hard Lessons You Only Learn the Long Way

Heartbreak is loud, messy, overwhelming, sis. Trust me, I get it. It’s difficult to see clearly when you’re still bleeding. For me, the real clarity came later, when things got quiet, my adrenaline faded, and the fantasy stopped fighting for space in my mind. That’s when I started to see the relationship for what it actually was, not what I kept hoping it could be.

It took me a while to accept that mixed signals weren’t confusing or complicatedThey were an answer. A man who wants you doesn’t keep you guessing, sis. He doesn’t run hot one day and disappear the next. He doesn’t give you emotional breadcrumbs and call it effort. I had to learn that inconsistency is its own form of communication.

I also had to face the truth about emotional unavailability. A man who can’t access his own feelings will always love you in fragments. Not because you’re unworthy or you’re not enough, but because that’s literally all he has the capacity to give. I spent so long taking that personally, thinking if I loved harder or waited longer, he’d eventually show up fully. But emotionally unavailable men don’t magically become emotionally present just because you’re patient.

Here are some hard lessons I learned that reshaped me:

These weren’t just lessons, sis… they were the beginning of me choosing myself again.

The Woman You’re Becoming Deserves More

Here’s the real plot twist, sis: loving the wrong men shaped me into the woman I’ve become. Every disappointment sharpened my intuition, activated my boundaries, and lifted my standards to a level only emotionally mature, aligned love can reach. I don’t get excited by breadcrumbs anymore and no longer find potential attractive. That’s the beauty of healing… it brings you back home to yourself.

You were never broken for loving the way you did. You simply outgrew the version of you who accepted emotional crumbs and called it connection. Now you’re becoming the woman who chooses herself without apology, the woman who refuses to shrink her worth for anyone, the woman whose foundation is radical self-love
